The premise of chiropractic is based on your body’s ability to self-heal and self-regulate, and since the nervous system controls and coordinates these functions, changing the nervous system in a positive or negative way will affect your health proportionally.
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health profession that focuses on the inherent power within your body to self-heal and self-regulate. This inherent power is controlled and regulated by your nervous system. We experience problems with this power when there is interference in the function of our nervous system, this interference can affect the control and coordination of the way that your body self-heals and self-regulates.
As the nervous system is one of the most delicate systems in your body, it needs protection, which is provided by the skeleton, specifically your skull and spine. Not only does the spine protect the nervous system, it also offers a structural base for your muscles and a vast possibility of movement for our human frame. Unfortunately, things such as bad posture, slips, falls, car accidents, repetitive movements, sports injuries or any other physical trauma can limit the ability of the spinal bones to move properly, the bones can then put pressure on the nerves causing a drop in the signal intensity of the messages sent from your brain to your body. You can imagine that if your brain is not sending the right amount of signal to your legs that you might not be able to walk and run to your best ability, or if the signal was reduced to your lungs, you probably would not be able to breathe at your best either. Sometimes this pressure is something that you can feel, however most of the time you can have pressure on the delicate spinal nerves and never feel it. It is by helping to remove this pressure on the nerves that chiropractic can better your health. We look for these areas in your spine where there is pressure—which we call subluxations—and relieve the pressure on your nervous system. By re-establishing the communication link between your brain and your body we help you get healthy, stay healthy and avoid creating future problems.
I’m pregnant, how can chiropractic benefit me and my growing baby?
Pregnancy causes many changes to your body, not only your hormones, but your spine, skeleton, and ligaments will change during the process as well. Let’s face it, everything changes! As stated elsewhere on this site, your CNS(central nervous system) controls and coordinates all of the delicate processes in your body, including all of the changes that you will experience and even the development of your growing baby. Making sure that your nervous system is operating at its peak, is not only beneficial to help you navigate all of these changes, but it is beneficial for the developing child as well. Moms come to us to get help dealing with issues like sciatica, lower back pain, and headaches. Pelvic or breech positioned babies, many times are caused by subtle misalignments in your pelvis, that may not hurt or cause any noticeable symptoms. With gentle chiropractic adjustments, you may be able to experience natural childbirth, and not have to resort to caesarean section surgery due to the baby being able to turn naturally inside the womb. After giving birth, many moms have aches and pains, and actually feel out of alignment, we can help your body return to, many times, even better than it was before the pregnancy. The challenge of caring for a new born can take you to the limit of your capacity, and post-partum adjustments can help you maintain your energy levels and function at your highest capacity.
Did you know that chiropractic adjustments should start at birth?
Many “adult” spine problems have their start in the early stages of development, some, even as early as the birth process. Even “normal” or “natural” births can stress the nervous system and the spine, which will affect the development of the child, as the saying goes, “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree.” Some symptoms of nervous system interference in your child could include, but are not limited to: infantile colic, breathing difficulties, sleep issues, allergic reactions, and even chronic infections. A slight trauma during infancy or childhood can affect the future development of your spine, and this can cause problems with the function of your nervous system. For the above reasons, it makes good sense to practice good spinal hygiene in order to ensure the best possible functioning of your nervous system. Just like we teach our children to brush and take care of their teeth from a young age, taking care of your nervous system from the beginning is one of the keys to having great health.
